Key Stage 3 - Focus Statement

At Key Stage 3, puplis shold be given opportunities to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired at Key Stage 2. Pupils should be given opportunities to evaluate and respond practically and imaginatively to the methods and approaches of others, including their peers, artist... working in a range of media and from diverse contemporary and historical cultures and contexts including local and Welsh examples. They should be taught to develop the skills and understanding involved in the process of making, including the ability to select, control and experiment with a wide range of materials, tools and techniquies, in two and three dimensions and on a varitey of scales. They should be taught to apply the visual language of art, craft and design imaginatively and develop their visual perception, recoriding from observation, experience and imagination, and to visualise ideas drawing on a wide range of resourcematerials including, where appropriate, ICT, which they have selected and organised from the natural and made environment. (Art in the National Curriculum in Wales)

By working on the units in the pack pupils at Key Stage 3 will learn to:

  • Analyse, compare, contrast and evaluate their own work and that of other artists, using their knowledge to enrich and inform their work
  • Explore the diverse ways that artist work
  • Extend their work, methods and results of their investigation, modifying and refining their work throughdiscussion and reflection
  • Identify and work with the visual elements of art on the making of images and artefacts
  • Explore and experiment with materials, images and ideas
  • Experience a wide range of techniques and media to realise their ideas, express their feelings and communicate meaning
  • Develop specific skills for recoriding from experience, observation, memory and the imagination, using a variety of media
  • Explore and use a range of reference material and resources to setablish and develop ideas or themes
  • Keep a sketchbook to recor information and ideas to initiate and support independant work

GCSE

By using this pack candidates should experience a broad curriculum in art that include:

  • A good range of different kinds of creative activitieds with techniques, tools and materials
  • An introduction to contemporary practitioners and contact with art material and examples, as well as historical and cultural sources and contacts
  • Different learning approaches such as individual, groupand whole class
  • Working in both two and three dimensions, including ICT where appropriate, on a variery of scales
  • Varying methods of analysis, interpretation and presentation

By working on the units in this pack pupils at GCSE will learn to:

  • Research and enquiry; record observations, experiences and ideas in forms that are appropriate to intentions
  • Analysis and evaluation; analyse and evaluate images, showing understanding of context
  • Creative making; develop and explore ideas using media, processes and resources, reviewing, modifying and refining work as it progresses
  • Personal response; present a personal response, realising intentions, and making informed connections with the work of others
