Arteffact
| A cluster of museums in north Wales is piloting a new way of working collaboratively in order to offer a service that is tailored to reduce symptoms of mental distress through creative engagement.
Research is at the core of this project. We are exploring the notion of whether additional benefits (beyond simply participating in arts activities) can be achieved through engaging creatively with museum collections and spending time in the museum environment. The project name, Arteffact, reflects the combined importance of using historic objects to inspire people's creativity; and the Welsh spelling of a word, which is also recognisable in English, embraces the cultural diversity of people in Wales. Our overarching goal is to create an evidence base to demonstrate the benefits of this 'alternative' mental health intervention model that can complement and reduce the burden on medical services. We want to demonstrate the expanded role that museums and other cultural services can play within their communities. And we want to create a sustainable model that ensures these kinds of services can be consistently available when people need them, in a form that can be supported by the health board and other agencies.
