Self-guided visits

We welcome schools that would like to devise their own programme and are happy to discuss options with teachers beforehand.  Teachers’ Notes are available on request.  These include a brief history of Bodelwyddan Castle and point out things of interest in each of the historic rooms.

There are two quiz sheets available for primary age children.

1)     ‘Rhymes and Riddles’, answer the riddles and brain teasers as you tour the Castle (in English only).  Answer sheet available for teachers.  Suitable for upper KS2 pupils.

2)     ‘I spy…’, a visual quiz in which pupils are encouraged to hunt for clues in each of the rooms.  Suitable for all ages, including Reception and KS1.

Audioguides are available in English, basic English and Welsh.  These give visitors a 40 minute tour of the Castle in the character of members of the Williams family who lived here.

Victorian Toys and Games is a hands-on gallery with opportunities to dress up and play with a range of favourite Victorian toys and inventions.

Making Portraits is a suite of galleries with low-tech interactives designed to help you discover how paintings communicate.  Themes include self-portraiture and group portraits.  Ideal for group work.

The Orienteering course is a really enjoyable way of exploring the grounds at Bodelwyddan Castle .  There are two levels of course available, which makes this an ideal activity for all ages and abilities.  We will provide you with a pack on the day with everything you need, including lesson plans, laminated maps, course cards, pencils, etc.  Please book this in plenty of time in order that we can ensure the course is clear and maintained.

The Woodland Walk is a wonderful way of experiencing the diverse natural habitat at Bodelwyddan Castle .  Wind-up listening posts will shortly be installed but in the meantime, we have a printed guide available on request.

 Cost:

The charge for self-guided visits is £2.00 per pupil.  Accompanying adults are free of charge.  This includes access to all areas of the Castle and grounds.

For special exhibitions and/or grounds only, the charge is £1.00 per pupil.

There is an additional charge of £1.00 per person for the Orienteering Course.

Welsh Art from the Clwyd Fine Arts Trust collection.

Bodelwyddan Castle houses a collection of Welsh art, particularly relevant to North Wales .  We aim to show a selection of works from the collection each year.  However, schools are welcome to book a ‘private viewing’ in which works from the collections are made available for a talk of workshop.  The collection is particularly good for groups looking at themes of landscape, industry, portraiture and abstract art.
